Clarity over complexity
A sophisticated plan should still be understandable. If you cannot explain the strategy to your spouse, the plan needs more work.
Our story
Before becoming a financial advisor, Sarah Mitchell spent six years working on the corporate side of technology.
The experience gave her an unusually close view of how stock-based compensation changed people's financial lives.
Small decisions. Large consequences.
Sarah worked alongside people who were excellent at making difficult decisions at work. Their personal finances were different.
One colleague exercised options without understanding the tax result. Another sold ESPP shares just weeks before receiving more favorable tax treatment. Others accumulated vested RSUs year after year because every decision to sell felt like a bet against the company that had built their careers.
Several already had advisors. Those advisors managed investments well enough. But the equity-compensation questions were handled at an annual review, referred to the CPA, or discussed after the transaction had already happened. For the people Sarah wanted to help, that was backwards.
The company stock was driving the taxes, the investment risk, the retirement timeline, the cash-flow decisions, and often the emotional relationship with money itself.
So she built a practice around it.
Why Equipath exists
Sarah earned the CFP® and CEPA® designations and founded Equipath Wealth Partners in 2018. The firm was designed around one premise:
Equity compensation deserves a planning practice built around it.
Focus is an operating decision here.
Our principles
A sophisticated plan should still be understandable. If you cannot explain the strategy to your spouse, the plan needs more work.
We begin with the decision that needs to be made. Investments are one tool inside that work.
Saving a dollar of tax this year can be a poor decision if it costs several dollars later. We evaluate decisions against the longer horizon.
Clients should understand why a recommendation exists, where the tradeoffs sit, and what would cause the recommendation to change.
